Hormone Receptors Flashcards
IntRAcellular Signalling
communication within a Cell
IntERcellular Singallin
Communication between different cells
Ligand
Any molecule/protein that binds to a specific site on a protein or any other molecule e.g. hormone-receptor
Receptor
A molecule that recognises and binds to a ligand with high specificity
What is the difference between AFFINITY and AVIDITY?
Affinity is the strength, Avidity is the total strength of interaction that has several binding sites.
What hormone are secreted by the Hypothalamus?
Thyrotropin-Releasing hormone Somatostatin Gonadotrophin-releasing hormone Corticotrophin-releasing hormone Growth hormone releasing Factor Prolactin inhibiting factor (dopamine)
What hormones are secreted by the Anterior Pituitary?
TSH Luteinizing Hormone Folic-stimulating Hormone Growth Hormone Prolactin Adrenocorticotropin
What hormones are secreted by the Posterior pituitary?
Vasopressin
Oxytocin
What hormones are secreted by the thyroid?
Thyroxine and triiodothyronine
Calcitonin
What hormone is secreted by the Parathyroid?
Parathyroidhormone
What hormone is secreted by the adrenal cortex?
Aldosterone and Cortisol
What hormones are secreted by the Adrenal medulla?
Adrenaline and noradrenaline
What hormones are secreted by the Ovary?
Oestrogen and Progesterone
What hormone is secreted by the testis?
Testosterone
Intracellular Receptors
- act directly on the control of gene expression
- small hydrophobic hormones
- carried by plasma proteins
- diffuse across plasma membrane
- intracellular receptors in cytoplasm/nucleus
- some receptors are cytoplasmic some are nuclear
