Hormonal Response to Exercise - Chap 5 Flashcards
Know how a hormone works (lock and key). How does a hormone know which tissue to act upon?
Hormone (epinephrine) will find its receptor in the body that possesses matching stereochemistry “fit”
Activation of glycogen phosphorylase = glycogen breakdown
What glands produce cortisol?
Adrenal glands
Which glands produce growth hormone?
Pituitary gland
Which glands produce catecholamines (epinephrine/norepinephrine)
Adrenal glands
Which glands produce insulin?
Pancreas
Which glands produce glucagon?
Pancreas
How does exercise impact the secretion of hormone?
Gradual increase of hormones during high intensity exercise. As well as duration of exercise. (growth hormone, glucagon, cortisol)
Describe the importance of blood glucose maintenance during exercise &
how this level is maintained.
Brain relies on it as its only nutrient source.
- Liver glycogenolysis
- Gluconeogenesis
- Inhibit glucose entry to muscle
- Lipolysis in muscle spares glucose use.
