Hormonal contraception Flashcards
Tell me about FSH
secreted by anterior pituitary
stimulates ovarian follicle development
peaks at ovulation
increased number of follicles increases the amount of oestrogen
Tell me about LH
Secreted by the anterior pituitary
massive peak stimulates ovulation
stimulates production of corpus luteum which increases progesterone levels
The menstrual phase is day 1-5 what happens during this time?
Levels of progesterone are low causing the shedding of the endometrium - menstruation
the Proliferative phase is day 6-14 what happens during this time?
increasing oestrogen causes proliferation of the functional layer of the endometrium
The secretory phase is day 15 - 28 , what happens during this time?
progesterone causes the endometrial glands to develop and start secreting glycogen
How does synthetic oestrogen provide contraception?
slightly raised levels of oestrogen inhibit FSH and LH
Inhibition of FSH -prevents ovarian follicle development
inhibition of LH - prevents ovulation
How does synthetic progesterone provide contraception
high levels of pregesterone inhibit LH
thickens cervical mucous
