Hormonal and neural mechanisms Flashcards
Hypothalamus
Responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body
Lateral Hypothalamus
Responsible for feeling hunger
Ventro-Medial Hypothalamus
Responsible for satiety
Neural process
When blood is low-Liver sends a signal to the lateral hypothalamus causing neurons to fire which cause hunger. When you eat, glucose enters the blood and detected by the ventromedial hypothalamus causing satiety.
Ghrelin
Hormone that causes hunger-secreted by stomach into bloodstream.Detected by hypothalamus, creating hunger. When eating, the stomach stops releasing ghrelin, which then stops hunger.
Leptin
Hormone that makes you feel full-secreted by fat cells into bloodstream.Detected by hypothalamus, creating the signal that fat stores are full and you do not need to eat.
A03-APHAGIA AND HYPERPHAGIA
Aphagia(inability to eat when food is required) caused by damage to LH.
Hyperphagia(inability to stop eating when full)Caused by damage to vmh.
A03-Biological determinism
Physiological drives can be overcome e.g dieiting, bulking or inability to get food.
A03-Animals and Ghrelin
Studies have found animals who were injected with ghrelin were found to eat more, however these findings cannot be generalized properly to humans.
