How do innovatoin, technology and organizations interact?
Innovation is often spurred by technolgy. Innovation and technology affect organizations. Organizations affect efficient and effective use of technology. Organizations affect innovation.
- Innovations may completely change the way organizations function
- Technology and organizations are intertwined: When thinking of new technology or other innovations, you should always take the characteristics of the organization into account
Definition product innovation
Several definitions and understandings of what product innovation is.
Some emphasize the ‘newness’ of a product, some the ‘uniqueness’, some the ‘complexity’ (the creation of something new)
Difference invention and innovation
Invention creates something new, innovation creates something that sells.
Inventions and innovations do not have to be technological.
Invention
Did not exist before, the creation of a thing or ability for the first time.
An invention creates something new.
Innovation
Using that thing/ability (the invention) to create impact (for example: financial impact or environmental impact)
An innovation creates something that sells.
Innovation means doing something with an invention. You’re making an impact and you are
using an invention to create value through economic/societal impact by changing behaviors,
interactions, processes, etc.
Invention + impact = innovation.
Invention + market entry via user diffusion/adoption.
