Hooke's Law Flashcards
what is the relationship between the extension of an elastic object and the applied force defined by
Hooke’s Law
what does Hooke’s Law state
the extension of an elastic object is directly proportional to the force applied, up to the limit of proportionality
what does directly proportional mean in terms of springs
the more force that is applied, the greater the extension
what is the limit of proportionality
if more force is added, the object may extend but will not return to its original shape when the force is removed (it will be inelastically deformed)
how is Hooke’s Law represented on a graph
a straight line on a force-extension graph
what is the relationship between force and extension once a material is beyond its limit of proportinallity
non-linear
what are the two ways in which the deformation of a shape can be
elastic or inelastic
when does elastic deformation occur
when objects return to their original shape when the stretching force is removed
what are some examples of materials that undergo elastic deformation
rubber bands, fabrics, and steel springs
when does inelastic deformation occur
when objects remain stretched and do not return completely to their original shape even when the stretching force is removed
what are some examples of materials that undergo inelastic deformation
plastic, clay, glass
