Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Mixtures & Solutions Flashcards
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Solution
A mixture that appears to be a single substance but is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly across. They are typically described as Homogenous mixtures.
Solute
Substance that is dissolved
Solvent
Substance in which the solute is dissolved in
Soluble
Able to dissolve
Insoluble
Incapable of dissolving
Homogeneous Mixture
A combination of substances in which the appearance and properties are the same throughout.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A combination of substances in which different components are easily observed.
Concentration
A measure of how much of solute dissolved in a solvent.
Solubility
Amount of solute that is needed to make a saturated solution using a given amount of solvent at a certain temperature.
Suspension
MIxture in which particles of a material are dispersed throughout a liquid or gas but are large enough that they settle out.
Colloid
Mixture in which the particles are dispersed throughout but are not heavy enough to settle out.
