Homework Booklets Flashcards
Define the newton
The force that causes a mass of one kilogram to accelerate one m/s
Define speed
Distance travelled per unit time
Define a joule
The unit of work/energy when a force of one newton moves throufh one metre (in the direction of force)
Explain how to determine the load on a spring at the elastic limit
Add small mass to cause extension then remove mass to see if spring returns to original length
Repeat for larger masses and note maximum mass for when it is elastic
Define gravitational potential energy
The energy of a mass due to its position in a gravitional field
Discuss the energy changes that occur when a skier travels down a runway
Gravitational potential converted to kinetic energy
And thermal energy
Explain how a skier attempts to increase the horizontal distance as he travels before landing on the ground
Increase speed down runway
Larger surface area of skis
Point skis upwards
Lie as flat as possible / streamlining
State and explain why two reasons why the useful output power generated by a rotating wheel and falling water is less than the calculated value
Not all potential energy of water will be converted to kinetic (friction w ground/air resistance, water retains some ke)
Friction in rotation of wheel
Frictionbin generator
