homework 101 Flashcards
Scrooge… wept to see his poor forgotten self as he used to be.
Dickens uses the verb ‘wept’ to show how much he had changed . This links to one of the main subjects change.
I wish, … but it’s too late now.
dickens shows how scrooge wants to change but the word ‘wish’ shows he does not like the way he acted before.
Leave me! Take me back. Haunt me no longer!
this quote shows that he has seen something that he strongly dislikes and does not want to see anymore
two children; wretched, abject, frightful, hideous, miserable…a boy and girl. Yellow, meagre, ragged, scowling, wolfish… a stale and shrivelled hand, like that of age, had pinched, and twisted them, and pulled them into shreds…monsters
the list that dickens uses shows just how horrible and meaningful they are. It also shows how they ruin mankind.
This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both, and all of their degree, but most of all beware this boy, for on his brow I see that written which is Doom, unless the writing be erased.
This shows that they are both horrible and represent bad things.
a solemn Phantom, draped and hooded, coming, like a mist along the ground, towards him.
the simile ‘like mist along the ground’ shows that is devouring and covers the place and eats it up.
Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me, by an altered life!
this quote shows that scrooge has changed and is doing better
Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!
this is scrooge showing that he does not want to die
