Gave right to buy 640 acre cheaply where rainfall was a particular problem, 1877

What was the transcontinental railroad. When was it completed?
A train linking East to West, 1860s
Why did transcontinental railroad make land cheaper?
Railroad companies sold land either side off at low prices, easy to get to plains
What problems did homesteaders face?
Water shortage, extreme weather, fuel, dirt and disease, lack of building materials, protecting crops, ploughing, growing crops, natural hazards
What helped solve some problems encountered by homesteaders on the Plains?
Windmills for water (first in 1874), dry farming, growing surplus, hard winter wheat, barbed wire (invented in 1874 by Glidden), sod-buster, other machinery, hard work
What were there houses?
Sod housed- made of mud
