Homeostatis Flashcards
What DOES homeostasis mean?
Homeo- same
Stasis- staying
What IS homeostasis?
The process of the body maintaining a stable internal environment.
Negative Feedback loop
Negative feedback loop occurs when the body tries to reverse a condition its experiencing.
The loop is: body is in homeostasis—> variable throws body out of balance—> body counteracts in response—> body returns to homeostasis
Ex. Body is hot —> sweat is produced —> you cool down
Positive feedback
The body increases the variable its experience
Ex. Giving birth–>contractions become more frequent–>pushes baby out of canal
Hyperglycemia
Lots of glucose in the blood
Stimulus: blood glucose levels increase
Counter response: The pancreas releases insulin to open up cells. Cells take up glucose and use it as energy
Result: blood glucose levels decline, and body returns to homeostasis
Hypoglycemia
Low levels of glucose in the body.
Stimulus: low blood glucose levels
Counter response: Alpha cells in the pancreas release glucagon–>liver breaks down glucagon and released glucose
Result: blood glucose levels increase
