Homeostatic Control (E1) Flashcards
How did American physiologist Walter Cannon describe homeostasis?
He described it as the “maintenance of nearly constant conditions in the internal environment.”
How is disease classified in relation to homeostasis?
Disease is considered a disruption of homeostasis
What is the function of the control center?
To receive and process information from the receptor
What is the function of the receptor?
To receive information that something in the environment is changing
What is the function of the effector?
To respond to the commands of the control center by either opposing (i.e., negative feedback) or enhancing (i.e., positive feedback) the stimulus
Explain body temp regulation (i.e., negative feedback) in terms of receptor, control center, and effector.
Receptor - in response to cold temps, arrector pili muscles contract, causing goosebumps
Control center - hypothalamus recognizes cold temps/drop in body temp and initiates response to combat them
Effector - body starts shivering to maintain body heat
