Homeostasis Key Words Flashcards
Define beta cells
Beta cells are a group of cells located in the islets of langerhans within the pancreas and produce insulin when blood glucose levels are high
Define glucagon
Glucagon is a hormone that increases blood glucose levels and is produced by A-cells
What is glucoregulation
The regulation of glucose within the body
What is gluconeogenesis
A process by which non carbohydrate molecules such as amino acids and glycerol are converted to glucose
What is glycogenesis
Is the conversion of glucose to glycogen and occurs when beta cells release insulin
What is glycogenlysis
Is the process when glycogen is converted to glucose when a-cells produce glucagon which increases blood glucose levels
Define alpha cells
Alpha cells are cells located in the islets of langerhans in the pancreas and produce glucagon when blood glucose levels are low
What is insulin
A hormone produced by B-cells to decrease blood glucose levels
What is negative feedback
Negative feedback is when a substance is restored back to its normal optimum level
What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is when a person does not produce any insulin or enough and type 2 diabetes is when a persons cells loses sensitivity to insulin so cannot absorb glucose
What is the second messenger model for adrenaline
The second messenger model for adrenaline is when the hormone adrenaline binds to a glycoprotien receptor on a target cell to form a Horm-recp complex, activating a enzyme within the target cell that produces a chemical the chemical produced causes glycogen to convert to glucose
