Homeostasis And Menstrual Cycle Flashcards
What does our body achieve through feedback mechanisms?
Homeostasis
Define the ff.: Positive feedback and give an example
Greater secretion of hormones
Infrequent
Less associated with body maintenance
Childbirth - Baby takes up all space inside of the womb, stretch receptors activate and the hypothalamus excretes greater amount of oxytocin causing the female uterus to contract strongly until the baby is delivered.
Define the ff.: Negative feedback and give an example
Inhibits production of hormones
Frequent process in the human body
Done to maintain stability
High water content in human body - When the hypothalamus senses a high water level in the body, a greater amount of antiduretic hormone is excreted, causing the kidneys to remove more water and produce more urine to extract from the body’s system.
Also known as the period of the menstrual cycle.
Menstrual phase
Increased FSH levels produced by the pituitary gland stimulates production of follicles, sac-like cells that contain immature eggs.
Follicular period
Occurs when a mature egg is released from a follicle and transported to the fallopian tube awaiting fertilization by a mature sperm cell. This is the best time for pregnancy.
Ovulation
What happens when the female is pregnant during the Luteal phase?
The corpus luteum continues to produce progesterone and estrogen to thicken the uterus lining.
What happens if the female is not pregnant during Luteal phase?
If the female is not pregnant, the corpus luteum is absorbed, estrogen and progesterone levels decline, and the uterus lining is shed, resulting in a period.
Menarche
First menstrual period of girls, occurs around the onset of puberty
Menopause
Final menstrual period of women as a result of aging ovaries.
