Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis.
A condition of equilibrium (stability or balance) in the body’s internal environment.
What is the stimulus of the feedback system?
Any disruption to a controlled condition
What is the receptor/sensor of the feedback system?
Monitors the environment and responds to a stimulus
What is the control centre of the feedback system?
Determines set-point / range to be maintained. Analyses input and determines appropriate response (output|)
What is the effector of the feedback system?
The muscles or glands which bring about a response or effect.
Which are more common negative or positive feedback systems?
Negative
What do negative feed back systems do?
They inhibit a negative change and prevent sudden severe changes within the body. Once equilibrium is achieved the process is shut off.
What do positive feedback systems do?
They enhance and amplify the effector so that the response will occur at a faster rate and only stop when the stimulus is removed not to do with equilibrium.
