Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
Maintaining a stable environment.Keeping the right conditions so your body can function.
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment
How does negative feedback help maintain a stable environment?
When the level of something is too high or low your body sends negative feedback to bring it back to normal
What makes up the central nervous system and what does it do?
Brain and spinal cord
What is a synapse?
The connection between two neurons. The nerve signal is transferred by chemicals which diffuse across the gap.
What is the purpose of a reflex action?
The reflex action is used to help prevent injury
What is a reaction time?
How quick you respond to a stimulus
What is the cerebral cortex responsible for?
Consciousness,intelligence,memory and language
What are the three methods used by scientists to study the brain?
Studying patients with brain damage- if the brain has been damaged you can see how it effects the body
Electrically stimulating the brain- stimulate the brain electrically using an electrode and seeing what part of the brain it effects.
MRI scans- produces a detailed picture of the brain so you can see which part is stimulated when doing different activities.
What is the role of the cornea?
Transparent outer layer of the eye.It refracts light into the eye.
What is the role of the iris?
Muscles that control the diameter of the eye. Controls how much light enters the eye.
What is the role of the lens?
It focuses light onto the retina
