Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis
Maintenance of nearly constant conditions in the internal environment
Conditions in which the body internal environment remains relatively constant within its limits
What are the conditions of homeostasis?
An organism is in homeostasis when its internal environment
contains optimum concentration of gases, nutrients, ions and water
has an optimal temperature
has an optimal pressure for the health of the cells
What are the differences between the extracellular and intracellular compartments?
sodium(Na+) and chloride (Cl-) most abundant extracellular ions
Potassium(K+) and Phosphorus(PO4-) most abundant intracellular ions
What is negative and positive feedback?
negative: change in parameter causes a response that results in a return of that parameter to normal
ex: changein arterial pressure
Positive: change in parameter causes a response that results in an increase of the parameter. ex: child birth
What is gain?
Degree of effectiveness with which a control system maintains homeostasis.
gain=correction/error
correction= change in a controlled system minus change in a uncontrolled system
Cell membrane structure
phospholipid bilayer with hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails and proteins (peripheral or integral) associated with membrane
cell membrane function?
selective filter
separate intracellular and extracellular compartments
Major organelles and functions
Nucleus-stores DNA ER-synthesize proteins Golgi apparatus-packages proteins mitochondrion-produces energy (ATP) lysosome-digestion
What is human physiology?
Study of the functional organization of the human body
