Homeostasis Flashcards
What is a tonic clinic seizure?
A normal seizure, involving rhythmic firing of neurons and contraction of all muscles at once
What is homeostasis?
A physiological process that ensures internal systems are maintained at equilibrium despite variations in external conditions
What is the function of the pituitary gland?
Master endocrine gland
What occurs during positive feedback?
Increased output, increased input and hence further increased output. Promotes instability and a change in one direction
What occurs during negative feedback?
Increased output, decreased input which leads to decreased output. Promotes stability and prevents excessive changes
What is the function of the cerebellum?
Posture, learning and smoothing of fine motor skills
What is the function of the medulla?
Autonomic functions including cardiovascular, respiration, salivation and swallowing
What does feed forward do?
Anticipates changes, produces a pre-defined output and enhances homeostatic response
