Homeostasis Flashcards
homeostasis
describes the body’s ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions even though the outside world is continuously changing
receptor
first component of all homeostatic control mechanisms; monitors and responds to changes in the environment; responds to stimuli by sending input to the control center
control center
determines the level (set point) at which a variable is to be maintained, analyzes the information it receives, determines the appropriate response
effector
provides the means for the control center’s output to the stimulus
afferent pathway
from the receptor to the control center; afferent information approaches
efferent pathway
from the control center to the effector; efferent information exits
