Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal body cavity
Two subdivisions: cranial cavity and spinal cavity
Ventral body cavity
Much larger than dorsal; contains all visceral organs within the chest and abdomen; subdivided into the thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity
thoracic cavity
separated from the rest of the ventral cavity by the diaphragm; organs in the cavity are somewhat protected by rib cage; region called mediastinum is in the cavity
mediastinum
separates the lungs into right and left cavities; houses heart, trachea, and other visceral organs
abdominopelvic cavity
cavity inferior to the diaphragm
abdominopelvic quadrants
four regions within the abdominopelvic cavity: right upper quadrant (RUQ), right lower quadrant (RLQ), left upper quadrant (LUQ), and left lower quadrant (LLQ)
nine abdominopelvic regions
divided by four planes into: umbilical, epigastric, hypogastric (pubic), right and left iliac (or inguinal), right and left lumbar, right and left hypochondriac
umbilical region
centermost region of the abdominopelvic, deep to and surrounding the umbilicus (navel)
epigastric region
superior to the umbilical region
hypogastric (pubic) region
inferior to the umbilical region
right and left iliac (or inguinal) regions
lateral to the hypogastric region
right and left lumbar regions
lateral to the umbilical region
right and left hypochondriac regions
flank the epigastric region and contain the lower ribs
Other body cavities
oral and digestive cavities; nasal cavity; orbital cavities; middle ear cavities
