Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a relatively constant environment for the cells within the body.
What does homeostasis allow for 2
Help maintain optimal conditions for cellular reactions
Gives organisms independence fromt he external environment whilst still existing within it
Negative feedback
When a factor moves away from the ideal, a set of processes move it back towards normal
Hormones?
Molecules released by the endocrine glands directly into the blood that travel to the target organ to produce an affect
Endocrine glands
A ductless gland that secretes hormones DIRECTLY into the blood
Target cells
Cells that have receptors embedded in the plasma mem that are complementary in shape to specific hormone molecules. Only these cells will respond to that hormone
Exocrine gland
A gland that secretes hormones into a duct
Duct?
A tube lined with epithelial cells and conveying a secretion
Function of Vasa Recta 2
Blood in Vasa Recta delivers O2 and nutrients to cells of the nephron
Carries water and mineral ions reabsorbed from the kidneys
On a diagram how can the PCT be distinguished from the DCT
PCT have microvilli (brush border)
