Homeostasis Flashcards
Study, study, study!
What is homeostasis?
Ways the body maintains its internal environment.
Describe the endocrine system
It is a ductless system that uses hormones as messengers. The endocrine glands excrete the hormones directly into the bloodstream to perform on the target organ.
What is a negative feedback response?
When the body senses an unbalance, a negative feedback loop kicks in to reduce/cancel out the stimulus to stablize the body. (i.e when glucose levels rise, the negative feedback response is the secretion of insulin to stablize it again.)
What are exteroreceptors?
They detect external stimuli. They detect the five senses.
Define chemoreceptor
Taste and smell receptors.
Define mechanoreceptor
Hearing, touch and pain receptors.
Define photoreceptor
Vision receptors.
Define thermoreceptor
Temperature receptors.
Define interoreceptor
Detects internal states such as blood pressure and chemistry.
Order of the negative feedback loop?
- Stimulus (receptors detect change)
- Receptors message the control centre
- Control centre messeges the effectors
- Effectors perform the correct actions.
