Homeostasis Flashcards
Law of tolerance
-An organisms success is based on the interaction with a complex set of conditions that each organism has a certain minimum and maximum and optimum environmental conditions
- the response determines success of on organism in an environment
Advanced lee Biggs law of minimum
A reaction process is limited by the most limiting component or conc in a reaction
Aerobic performance
Describes an organisms ability to sustain aerobic activities necessary for survival
Scope for aerobic respiration stages
- Critical temperature - point where the organism shifts from aerobic to anaerobic due to too high or low temp
- Optimum temperature- can meet oxygen demand efficiently - allows increased met. rates and max activity
- Pejus point - a decline in performance - asymmetrical effects on bell curve
- Onset denaturation - temp threshold causing breakdown of bonds and cellular functions
Optimum temp on pop size
Optimum temp where pop thrives - highest pop at peak of bell curve
Zone of tolerance on pop size
Leads to decrease in pop size eventually point where pop cannot exist - zone of intolerance
Biogeography and physical tolerance
Physio responses to environ variables determines the distribution of organisms globally
Physiology research impact on ecology
Understanding physio limits plays crucial role in where organisms are found globally
Wide tolerance range
Likely to be widely distributed
Limits of tolerance - larval stages
Show activity at extremities such as low temps however only find adults at shallower regulated environ - this can trigger ecological evol forming new deep sea species (king crabs)
King crabs
Closely related to shallow dwelling crabs however possess citrate synthase gene which code for heat shock proteins prevent death
Homeostasis
Tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium among interdependent elements especially those maintained by physiological processes
Homeostasis requirements
Control centre which mediates or acts to create a response to change and to correct imbalance
Receptors - to detect change or imbalance within organisms
Vitality
How healthy the organism is body and state
Stress response
Induced in response to an increase in stress maintaining and achieving homeostasis
At incr stress cell death may occur if homeostasis processes cannot counteract
