Homeostasis Flashcards
Define Homeostasis
Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment/ equilibrium
4 homeostatic mechanisms
Blood glucose levels , Blood calcium levels , Thermoregulation , Osmolarity
Correct order of command chain for Homeostasis
Effectors , Control centre , Receptors ,
Receptors, Control Centre , Effectors
Two main body systems that work together to control homeostatic responses
Nervous system , Endocrine system
Describe the receptors role
Detects changes , sends information to the control centre
Describe the control centres role
sets the range for factors , evaluates input from the receptors & gives output commands , acts on nerve impulses or hormones
Describe the effectors role
Receive output from control centre , creates a response/effect that changes the controlled condition. Usually muscle contractions , or gland secretions
Define the term negative feedback
A response that slows or stops responses to maintain equilibrium
Explain how the body uses homeostasis to manage blood glucose levels
If levels raise above (5.00mmol/L) ; The pancreas will secrete Insulin. Body cells will take in glucose for fuel , liver will convert glucose into Glycogen for storage.
If levels lower , Pancreas will secrete Glucagon . Which tells the liver to convert the glycogen back into glucose & release it back into the bloodstream.
