Homeostasis Flashcards
Define homeostasis
A central principle in physiology and aims to maintain life by constantly adapting to the external environment.
Describe the components of a feedback loop
Sensors, comparator, effectors
Describe the types of compensatory regulatory responses
Cold temp- vasoconstriction, shivering, goose bumps
Too hot - vasodilation, sweating
Describe a positive feedback loop, with an example
Acts to increase an effect.
Blood pressure
Describe a negative feedback loop, with an example.
Acts to reduce an effect
thermoregulation.
Describe physiological modification of set points
Set points are changed from normal due to different circumstances.
If there is an infection- pyrexia
Persistant hypoxaemia- pCO2
