Homeostasis Flashcards
Define Homeostasis
The maintenance of the internal environment conditionals at an optimal level when changes occur to the internal or external environment.
what two systems are involved in homeostasis?
The hormonal (endocrine) system and the nervous system
What is the role of negative feedback systems in homeostasis?
- Produce Stability
- Restore the Original State
What are negative feedback systems?
Negative feedback systems are a stimulus-response mechanism that produces a response to reduce the effects of the original stimulus.
What are effectors?
Either muscles (which contract in response to neural stimuli) or glands (which produce secretions)
What receptor detects touch, pressure, vibration and sound?
Mechanoreceptor
What receptor detects heat (and cold)?
Thermoreceptor
What receptor detects decreased arterial oxygen?
Chemoreceptor
What receptor detects tissue damage?
Nociceptor
What receptor detects light?
Photoreceptor
What do sensory receptors do?
Sensory receptors detect stimuli and can be classified by the type of stimulus.
