Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
What is homeostasis
A
The control of the body’s internal environment, to provide constant conditions despite external changes
2
Q
What are the 3 necessary components to an effective control system
A
- receptors to detect the change in conditions
- coordination centres to process the information
- effectors to bring about the correct response
3
Q
What does a receptor do when it detects a stimulus
A
It sends a nerve impulse along a sensory neuron
4
Q
Once the CNS has coordinated a response to a stimulus what does it do with it?
A
It sends a nerve impulse along a motor neuron
5
Q
Where is the nerve impulse taken buy a motor neuron?
A
It goes to an effector organ which carries out the response
6
Q
Give some examples of effector organs and their functions
A
Muscles- contract or relax
Glands-secrete hormones as part of the endocrine system
