Q

What are the main metabolic wastes in mammals?

A
  • Carbon dioxide (respiration)
  • Nitrogenous waste (urea): formed from the breakdown of amino acids (Excreted by the kidneys)
  • Bile Pigments: formed from the breakdown of haemoglobin from old red blood cells. (excreted in the bile from the liver into the small intestines via the gall bladder and the bile duct) (this is what colours your poo)

Q

Interesting facts about the liver

A
  • Very rich blood supply (oxygenated blood supplied through the HEPATIC ARTERY and go to the heart via the HEPATIC VEIN)
  • Supplied with blood loaded with products of digestion from the intestines via the PORTAL VEIN
  • 75% of the blood flowing through the liver comes from the PORTAL VEIN
