What do vitamins and minerals do for the body?
- Perform many jobs
- Heal wounds
- Boost immune system
- Convert food into energy
- Keep skin and vision healthy
How do vitamins and minerals contribute to health of body?
- Main job is to boost immune system.fight infection and support growth
- Help cells and organs do their jobs
*Where can vitamins and minerals be found?
- Mostly fruits and vegetables
- Vitamin A: Eggs, liver, oranges
- Vitamin C: Citrus fruits, most vegetables
- Vitamin E: Fatty fish, Avocados, Mangos
- The body can’t produce its own vitamins and minerals. Therefore, they must be consumed
Is it bad if you have too much/too little vitamins and minerals?
When you have too little vitamins and minerals:
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Increasedd risk of getting sick and getting infections
- Muscle weakness
- Poor wound healing
3 Examples of Vitamins and minerals and what they do:
Carrots: Vitamin A. Keeps skin healthy and improves vision.
Tomato: Vitamin C. Necessary for growth, wound healing and immune system
Fatty fish: Vitamin E. Improves health of blood, brain and skin.
What does fat do for the body?
- Giving body energy
- Protects organs
- Keeps blood pressure under control
How does fat contribute to overall health of body?
- Helps body absorb vitamins
- Are stored, so that you have energy
Where can fat be found?
- In Frans
- Polyunsaturated: Walnuts
- Monounsaturated: Olive
- Saturated: Butter
- Trans fats: Margarine
Is it bad if you have too much or too little fat?
- Too much fat increases cholestrol and the risk of getting heart diseases.
3 Examples of fat.
- Walnuts: Are good because they provide nutrients and fats, while still reducing bad cholestrol.
- Olives: Reduces bad cholestrol. Provides other nutrients
- Butter: Contains saturated fats, which raises bad cholestrol and lowers good cholestrol, but has some good nutrients.
What do carbs do for the body?
- Gives body glucose, which is converted into energy.
How do carbs contribute to overall health of body?
- Is the brain’s preferred energy source.
- Helps physical activities.
Where can carbs be found?
- Can be found in healthy and unhealthy foods
- Bread, oats, sodas etc
Is it bad if you have too much or too little carbs?
- Too little carbs give you make you dizzy and fatigued
- Too much carbs make you gain weight and increases risks of heart diseases
3 Examples of carbs
Pasta: Should be eaten in smaller amounts as it can increase cholestrol.
Sodas: Highly processed. They give a short boost of energy and increase cholestrol.
Brown bread: Has lots of nutrition, including fiber. Decreases bad cholestrol.
