Evolution Flashcards
Selection pressure*
Circumstances that kill a lot of the population of a species, leaving only the most adapted to survive.
1. Competition
2. Predators
3. Disease
Variation
Differences in characteristics of individuals in a species.
Adaptation
How living species adjust to their environment, either physically or behaviourally.
Natural selection
When individuals in a species that are less fitted to the environment die, while the more fitted individuals survive, reproduce and pass on their genes to its offspring/the next generation
Inheritance
Genes/Traits that are passed onto newer generations
Genes/traits
The characteristics of living things that can be passed on to the next generation.
Mutation
Rare changes in genes that give individuals rare characteristics. This can help the species survive through selection pressures (dark moths for example).
Species
A group of living things with very similar characteristics (egenskaper).
