What happened to Jews between 1933 to 1939?
Jews in Germany faced terrible discrimination and prejudice and some were killed.
What happened during WW2?
The mass killing of approximately six million Jews across Europe occurred.
What did the Nazis want to do?
Totally destroy Jewish life in Europe and commit genocide against Jews
What is genocide?
Any act committed with intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group
What other groups were victims of the Nazis?
Disabled people
Homosexuals
Jehovah’s Witnesses
Political opponents
Polish and Soviet citizens
Prisoners of War from the Soviet Union
What happened in March 1933?
A boycott of Jewish shops organised for one day
What happened in September 1938?
Hitler declared that he was prepared to occupy the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia) to protect the German-speaking people. Britain and France allowed this as long as Hitler wouldn’t invade the rest of Czechoslovakia - this was known as the Munich agreement
What happened in March 1939?
Hitler ignored the Munich agreement by invading the rest of Czechoslovakia.
What happened on 1 September 1939?
German troops invaded Poland
What did Neville Chamberlain aim to do in 1938?
He was determined to do everything he could to stop another war as he had lived through the horrors of WW1
What did Chamberlain believe was the best way to avoid another war?
A policy of appeasement towards Hitler
What is appeasement?
A diplomatic strategy of make concessions to an agressive foreign power in order to avoid war.
