Q

What does holistic communication require?

A

Holistic communication requires health professionals to apply the principles of effective communication to every individual within the context of their practice. Holistic communication requires willingness to communicate about contexts, experiences, thoughts, emotions, needs and desires, because in so doing the heath professionals will relate to all aspects of the whole Person/s (Brill & Levine 2005, Crotser & Dickerson 2010, Honeycutt & Milliken 2012, Levine 2014, White 2006, Young et al 2014)(Page 155). It requires effective use of empathy, touch and silence to empower the Person/s. When communicating holistically, it is also important to understand that the individual perspectives of each Person/s (Gordon et al 2006, Harms & Pierce 2011), as well as previous and present events, influence the choice of topics of communication and the interpretation of events and messages during communication. Q

Why does holistic care require the knowledge of other health professionals?

A

An awareness and understanding of the various health professions is important to ensure holistic care and positive outcomes (Selimen & Andsoy 2011, World Health Organization 1946) Openness to the involvement of multiple health professionals when assisting individuals, regardless if the presence of an inter-professional or multidisciplinary team, increases the potential for holistic care and positive outcomes (White 206) (Page 165)
