Holderness Coastline - Paper 1 Flashcards
Describe the location of the Holderness coastline (2 marks)
The Holderness coastline is located in Yorkshire on England’s east coast bordering the North Sea.
It extends from Flamborough head in the north to Spurn Head in the south
Is the Holderness coastline concordant or discordant?
Discordant
(layers perpendicular to the shore)
Concordant means layers of rock are parallel to the shore
Which rock is Flamborough Head made out of?
Chalk
Name the two main rock types in the Holderness Coastline
Chalk and Boulder Clay
Which is more resistant (harder): chalk or boulder clay?
Chalk
Which is less resistant (softer): chalk or boulder clay?
Boulder clay
Flamborough Head is an example of which erosional landform?
A headland
Why has Flamborough Head formed?
Discordant coastline where the surrounding soft boulder clay has eroded quicker than the harder chalk at Flamborough Head, leaving it jutting out to sea as a headland.
Name the coast on which you would find Flamborough Head
Holderness Coast
Spurn Head is an example of which depositional landform?
A spit
What type of landform is Spurn Head?
Depositional
A spit
What type of landform is Flamborough Head?
Erosional
A headland
What has formed behind Spurn Head?
A salt marsh
Bc waves can’t penetrate there (sheltered) allowing silts to be deposited
Why has a salt marsh formed behind Spurn Head?
Waves can’t penetrate behind the spit (sand/shingle strip)
Water in this sheltered area has less energy
This allows the deposition of silts
Why was it important to protect Mappleton?
A major road for the area passed through it relatively near the edge of the coast
Building a new road would’ve cost more than the sea defences did
Name a town on the Holderness coastline where coastal management strategies have been employed
Withernsea
Remember that Withernsea has an ‘n’
WitherNsea
Name 2 hard engineering strategies used to prevent coastal erosion at Withernsea
Sea Wall
Rock Armour
They have also used grounds but don’t worry abt remembering this
How have the hard engineering strategies at Withernsea caused conflict?
Starved beaches of sediment further down the coast
so they are more susceptible to coastal erosion
then erode at a faster rate
over 20 holiday homes at a nearby holiday park have had to be moved or demolished in the last few years
