Holderness Coast Flashcards
What is the long shore drift direction?
North to South
What engineering strategies were in place at Spurn head?
Groynes and a sea wall were in place at spurn head however they have been abandoned as a spit has formed.
Why is this coastline the fastest eroding coastline in Europe?
The long fetch from the North Sea brings powerful waves.
Chalk Cliffs provide little sediment to the coastline.
It is made out of soft boulder clay which can easily be eroded.
Increased climate change which means stormy conditions are more likely.
Why does it need protecting?
Rapid cliff erosion- up to 10 metres per year which is causing slumping of the boulder clay.
Rising sea levels (Up to 4 mm a year) due to a eustatic change
Homes and businesses at risk
Easington gas station moving closer to the coastline
The village of Mappleton (50 homes) under severe threat.
What will happen to Mappleton and Easington if no protection is put in place between them?
The areas in between will be eroded away and turn into a bay and Mappleton and Easington will turn into headlands.
What was added to Mappleton?
Rock armour and two rock groynes
