Holderness Flashcards
Costal retreat is occurring and cause of erosion was ….
Destructive waves causes not only hydraulic action as well as abrasion, attrition and weathering
Impacts of costal erosion :
Land lost to sea
Houses in danger of subsidence or destruction
Less land for farming
Conflicts :
Different approaches and not everyone agrees
Examples of hard engineering :
Groynes
Rock armour
Sea wall
Sea mattress/ off shore reef
Advantages of sea wall
Protects cliffs and buildings - reflects wave energy back out to sea.
Protects land behind.
Can attract tourists as a promenade for fares and fates.
Advantages of groynes
Prevents sea removing sand
Stopping long shore drift by making sediment build up.
Disadvantage of groynes
Exposes other areas of coastline
Advantages of Rock armour
Absorbs wave energy
Slows the speed of waves
Causes the wave’s energy to dissipate
Disadvantages of rock armour
They are expensive
Advantages of offshore reef/ sea mattress
Waves break on reef and loose their power before they hit the beach making them less destructive
Disadvantages of offshore reef/ sea mattress
Expensive and may interfere with fishing and movement of animals
Examples of soft engineering :
Managed retreat
Beach replenishment
Cliff regrading
Advantages of beach replenishment :
Sand reduces wave energy and maintains tourism as it does not act as visual pollution.
Disadvantage of beach replenishment :
Expensive for long term use and ultimately the problem is still occurring and has not been stopped
Advantage of managed retreat :
People and activities avoid erosion by moving inland.
Nothing serves as visual pollution
