Hodgkin's Lymphoma Flashcards
1
Q
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma Symptoms
A
- Painless adenopathy which can fluctuate
- “B symptoms”
*fever
*night sweats
*weight loss
*generalized pruritus w/o rash- due to inflammatory cells (increased eosinophils and mast cells)
- Nodal pain w/ ethanol ingestion
- Spread generally predictable- cervical nodes downward

Q
Classical vs. Non-Classical Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
A
6
Q
Hodgkin Lymphoma Diagnosis w/ Flow Cytometry
A
- Flow cytometry is not useful for HL b/c neoplastic cells are in the minority, as opposed to in NHL where the majority of cells are neoplastic
7
Q
How Does HL form?
A
- Activation of transcription factor NF-kB
*EBV infection- turn on genes that promote lymphocyte survival and proliferation
*EBV+ tumor cells express latent membrane protein (LMP-1) that upregulates NF-kB
- Loss of function mutations
- Rescues damaged germinal center B-lymphocytes that cannot express Igs from apoptosis => acquisition of mutations => Reed-Sternberg cells
8
Q
Reed-Sternberg Cells
A
- “Crippled” germina center B cells, meaning they have not undergone hypermutation to express their antibody
- Stained by CD30 staining

Q
Most Common HL
A
- Nodular Sclerosis
