HO1 - Lecture 4: Organisation of manufacturing Flashcards
Define Non-Value added activities (NVA).
Incurs a cost to organisation which cannot be passed onto customer = has not caused value of product to be increased.
eg: Storage, inspection, handling, sorting, checking, counting.
What are the 4 production methods used in manufacturing?
- Job
- Batch
- Flow
- Group
*each of them following set of circumstances: product demand, range of products produced, capital available.
What is Job production?
Used when products are made singly/ small batches - can operate effectively for low & high technology products - for either simple / complex processes.
*know diagram.
What are the advantages to job production?
- Customised product
- Planning and scheduling - easy
- Ability to modify part way through
- Quality - good
What are the disadvantages to Job production?
- High cost
- Low machine utilisation
- Reasonably short lead times
eg: prototypes, shipbuilding, construction
What is Batch production?
- Product = built in a series of stages.
- At each stage: number of units of product (batch) are processed before the whole batch moves onto the next stage.
- Prefer this production if: wide range of products & demand for products is varied.
eg: Hip joints - Companies w/ batch: use functional factory layout - similar processes & functions grouped together.
* know diagram 4.2 and 4.3
What are the advantages of Batch?
- high utilisation of machines
2. Increase vol. (compared to job).
What are the disadvantages of Batch?
- High WIP
- Long lead time
- No modification part way through
- Long process route
- Lots of NVA
- Quality issues
What is Flow/Mass production?
- Process of manufacturing product in a number of discreet steps but with no waiting at each stage for a batch of components to be produced.
- Combines: advantages of both job and batch production for high volume production.
- In this case the products pass through the production line as if they were in batches of one.
* know diagram 4.4
What are the advantages of Flow/mass? (3)
- Short as possible lead time
- V. high vol. - meet high demand
- Low “in process” inventory
What are the disadvantages of Flow/mass? (5)
- Deskilling of workforce
- Rapid build up of WIP - breakdown
- Need fair constant, high demand
- High amount of capital needed
- Every production has to take some amount of time
eg: cars *know 4.5
What is Group technology?
Extension of batch production in which the factory is organised w/ the aim of putting all the processes required for a particular product or family of products, into one area.
Area - cell.
*know 6
What are the advantages of group technology?
- Small batches: low WIP - short lead time
- Range of products
- Short process routes
- Multi-skilled workforce
- Scheduling simplified
What are the disadvantages of Group technology?
*Anything in batch disadv.
