What are the 2 primary treatment modalities for HNC?
Surgical resection
Radiotherapy w/out chemotherapy
What does each letter represent for tumor staging (TNM)?
T- size of tumor (1-4)
N- noduals it has spread (0-3)
M- indicates spreading or metasticizing to other parts of body (0-1)
Most common tumor locations in the oral cavity:
anterior floor of mouth tongue lateral floor of mouth tonsil base of tongue hard palate soft palate
What do you lose when you have a radical neck dissection?
Submandibular lymph nodes lymph nodes in neck sternocleidomastoid omohyoid spinal accessory nerve
When do you use flap reconstruction?
When sutures aren’t able to close or heal the surgery wound.
Side effects of radiation/chemo:
Xerostomia (dry mouth) Mucositis (ulcers) Fibrosis (dead tissue) Odynophagia (pain during swallow) Trismus (inability to open jaw)
What should your first question be when presented with a flap reconstuction patient?
What is their level of sensory awareness?
Staging of laryngeal cancer is broken down by:
Supraglottis
Glottis
Subglottis
Which type of tumors are less like to spread to the glottis/infraglottis?
Supraglottic
Locations of supraglottic tumors:
hyoid bone, epiglottis, AE folds, false VFs
