what is the distinction b/t HIV and AIDS?
HIV :is virus that targets WBC ( leukocytes) or T4 cells feels like worst flu ever, can be asymptomatic for 8 years
AIDS: chronic life threating illness caused by HIV virus: Normal CD4 count is 550-1500 and AIDS defining illness is below 300cells/mm3. Karposis sarcoma, thrush oral, PCP = Pneumocystis Carinii pneumonia
What population of people in the US is at risk for new infections?
13- 24 years old
What are symptoms of initial HIV infection?
diarrhea for two weeks, feels like worst flu ever!
What are the stages of HIV?
- acute infection: flu like
- Clinical latency: can last 8 or more years, still active
- AIDS CD4 cells fall below 200
What are the clinical problems related to HIV and AIDS ( musculoskeletal, neuro)?
1.Myopathy= weakness in muscles
2. Polymyositis= inflammatory process in muscle- WBC affected
3. Fatigue
4. weakness
Neuro:
1. Cognitive impairment with:
a. executive function skills
b. attention
c. motivation
d. emotion
e. Aids dementia
Peripheral Neuropathy: 1/3 develop in feet with numbness, tingling, burning and ms weakness.
Cytomegalovirus retinitis: causes blindness
What OT assessments are relevant for HIV and AIDS infected clients?
Barthal ( BI): assesses IadL, kitchen skills, financial management via community resources.
