How can someone get HIV?
It is an acquired virus meaning someone has to do certain things in order to be infected. You cannot acquire HIV from casual contact such as closed mouth kissing, hugging, sharing utensils, or shaking hands.

How can HIV be transmitted?
Unprotected or unsafe sex

Why is HIV dangerous?
It can mutate and change inside the body. It weakens the body’s immune system.
Is there a cure?
As of now, there is NO cure for HIV/AIDS.
What is chlamydia?
- Caused by bacteria
- Referred to as the silent disease as there are often no symptoms
- When they do occur, they include genital discharge and pain when urinating
- Affects reproductive organs
- If untreated, can cause infertility in both men and women
- Can be cured with antibiotics
Gonorrhea
- Caused by bacteria
- Thick yellowish discharge and burning sensation when urinating
- If left untreated, can cause Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Cured with antibiotics
Syphilis
- Has 3 stages
1) red painless sore at the place of infection and swollen lymph glands
2) severe rash and flu-like symptoms
3) Damage to organs - Untreated 3rd stage leads to heart problems, blindness, or death
- Stage 1 or 2 treated with antibiotics
Genital Herpes
- Caused by a virus
- Painful blisters around the genital region
- Painful blisters and sores on the skin
- Virus can lay dormant
- Treatment but no cure
Genital Warts
- Caused by HPV
- HPV is the most common STD
- Growths or bumps in the genital region
- Symptoms of HPV
- Surgery but no cure
- Vaccine given for cervical cancer to ages 9-26 as a preventative measure
