HIV/AIDS Flashcards
What do the HIV tat and rev gene products do?
Allow for temporal control of gene expression.
What is the advantage of having such a highly glycosylated envelope?
Antibodies are unable to fully neutralize virions.
What cells do HIV preferentially infect?
CD4+ T cells
What is the major reason why HIV has so much genetic variation?
High replication rates and errors.
How many CD4+ T cells does HIV kill/day?
10^8 to 10^9
What is currently standard treatment practice for HIV patients?
Triple combination therapy.
What is a “quiescent infected cell?”
A latently-infected cell with HIV that may become active after ART is stopped.
What is so bad about stopping ART all together?
Differential drug clearance can result in a period of monotherapy, which selects for drug resistant HIV-infected cells.
