What happened in the 1932 Presidential election campaign?
- Hitler ran for the position of President against Hindenburg.
- He blamed the “November criminals” and promised to build a better Germany.
Who were the “November criminals”?
The Weimar politicians who had signed the Treaty of Versailles.
What was the outcome of the 1932 Presidential election?
Hindenburg won, but only on a second vote. Hindenburg got 19 million votes, to Hitler who got 13 million votes.
What happened during the July 1932 Reichstag elections?
The campaign was very violent, almost 100 people were killed in street battles between the Nazis and the communists.

- The Nazis became the largest party.
- Nazis had 230 seats
- Hindenburg made Von Papen Chancellor.
Why were the November 1932 Reichstag elections called?
Because Von Papen had little support in the Reichstag, so in order to carry out his policies he had to get more support. The election was an attempt to do so.

Hindenburg thought that he would be able to control Hitler.

He convinced Hindenburg to disolve the Reichstag and to hold yet another election.

27th February 1933.
Who did the Nazis blame for the fire?
A communist was arrested, the Nazis were quick to blame the Communists for the fire.
What did Hitler do to respond to the fire?
He convinced Hindenburg to pass laws which restricted personal liberty, because of this thousands of communists were arrested.
What was the outcome of the March 1933 election?
- Nazis won 288 seats
* Had to form a coalition with the smaller nationalist party, which had 52 seats, in order to get a majority.
