Five of Hitlers main aims.
- Destroy the Treaty of Versailles.
- Create a Greater Germany (a country of all the German people).
- Lebensraum (living space) to conquer land for Germany in Eastern Europe.
- Defeat communism in Russia.
What happened in the Pact of Poland 1934?
Hitler signs a ten year non-aggression pact with Poland. Guaranteed boundaries of Poland. Poland and Britain are happy with Germany.
What happened in the Return of the Saar 1935?
The Saar land was under league control for 15 years. After, there was a plebiscite to see if they wanted to go to Germany or France. The votes came in 4800 to Hitlers favour (over 95%)
What happened in the Remilitarisation of the Rhineland in 1936?
7th March 1936 Hitler marched troops into the Rhineland, despite the ricks that France could easily beat them if they chose to attack, however Britain and France to busy with Abyssinian Crisis. He also had to go against his advisors including military ones, so if he lost everyone would have lost faith in him.
What was the result of the Remilitarisation of the Rhineland?
The League condemned Germanys actions. Only the USSR voted for sanctions. Britain was sympathetic for Germany as they thought the ToV terms were unfair.
What happened in the Failed Anschluss 1934?
Hitler tries to take power in Austria. Austrian Nazis murder the chancellor, Dolfuss. Italy moves its army to the border and Hitler backs down.
What happened in the Anglo-German Naval Agreement 1935?
Britain (without consulting France) helps Germany break the ToV by signing an agreement to allow Germany 35% of the size of Britain’s.
By 1938 how powerful is Germany?
Army - 800,000 men
Navy - 47 U-boats
AirForce - 2000 aircrafts
What happened in Anschluss 1938?
Hitler occupies Austria. First, Hitler encourages the Austrian Nazis to demand a union with Germany. Then he invades when the Austrian chancellor announces a vote to see what Austrians want. After the German invasion, 99 per cent of Austrians vote in favour of Germany. Britain and France do nothing.
