What’s the policy of Autarky?
- Economic self-sufficiency
- Produce enough goods on its own so it doesn’t have to import goods
- Doesn’t depend on imports
- Raw materials were prioritised
- Wanted to achieve autarky before the war started
- Wanted to strengthen armed forces (needed raw materials)
What were Hitler’s economic policies
- Economy focuses on war and rearmament
- Solve unemployment
- Drag Germany out of the world recession
- Make Germany self-sufficient
- Get rid of Jewish industrialists
Who were the two men that began an economic plan?
Hjalmar Schacht and Hermann goering
What did Hjalmar Schacht do in his New Plan?
- He promoted trade agreements with developing countries, trading manufactured goods with raw materials
- He reduced unemployment by:
1. Work creation projects
2. Compulsory Labour Service (RAD)
3. Conscription to the army
4. Dismissing Jews from jobs
What happened in 1936 that lead to Hermann Goering taking over?
He fell out with Hitler over the speed of rearmament and was replaced with Hermann Goering
What was the aim of Hermann Goering’s Four Year plan?
- Speed up rearmament and prepare Germany for war
- Autarky
What did Hermann Goering do under his Four Year Plan?
He increased the rate of rearmament and the army grew rapidly. Hitler began to openly break the TOV (Austria 1938, Sudetenland 1938 and Poland 1939)
Was Goering’s Four Year plan a success?
Unemployment dropped from 4.8mill to 0.5 mil.
Wages rose but were still lower than in 1928
By 1939, Germany was still not self-sufficient.
Overall it created jobs but did not reduce the amount of imported goods
