What new technology was used in WWI?
Airplanes, tanks, machine guns, grenades, and artillery.
What were trenches?
Trenches were long deep holes to protect soldiers from the opposing side.
What are some of the psychological issues soldiers faced in the trenches?
Soldiers in the trenches faced PTSD, constant fear and anxiety, isolation, homesickness, and survivors’ guilt.
Name all the types of trenches( Hint: there are four types)
Front trench, support trench, reserve, communication trenches
What were some of the dangers of the Trenches
Trenches had rats, fleas, and when it rained people would get trench foot.
Why was the reserve Trenches the most favored rotation of the soldiers?
The reserve trenches were the most favored rotation because it was safer, offered more rest, had better living conditions, and provided access to supplies and training. It was a break from the intense front-line action.
When was the best time to advance from the trenches?
Under the cover of darkness; during the night. They moved little by little; small groups.’z
What were the issues faced by generals during the trench warfare?
Generals faced uses like stalement, high casualties, tough logistics, communication problems, and keeping morale up.
What is propaganda? Give me four examples.
Propaganda are ideas spread to influence public opinion for or against a cause. Yellow journalism, news/newspaper, political cartoons, and posters.
What strategy was used during the Schlieffen Plan?
To quickly defeat France by advancing through Belgium and then turning to fight Russia. It aimed for a rapid victory to avoid a prolonged two-front war.
What three countries eliminated Serbia from the war?
Russia, Germany, and Austria-Hungary
What were Zeppelins?
Giant airships to bomb London and Eastern England, which they later found out they were filled with highly flammable hydrogen gas.
What happened when Zeppelins were hit by anti aircraft cannons?
They quickly became raging infernos when hit by the fire of anti aircraft guns.
What two countries entered the war on the Triple Alliances side?
austria-hungary and the ottoman empire
Why was it difficult for the Allies when they landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula?
The allies face rugged terrain, fortified Ottoman defenses and underestimate their enemy’s strength, making the Gallipoli landing extremely difficult and unsuccessful.
What are three factors that led to the US joining WW1?
The US joined WW1 mainly because of unrestricted submarine warfare by Germany, the Zimmermann Telegram, and strong economic ties with the Allies.
What is the Zimmerman telegram? Why was this important to the US joining the war?
The zimmermann telegram was a secret message sent by Germany to Mexico in January 1917. It was important because its interception outraged Americans and help push the US to WW1
What is Total War?
A war that involved the complete mobilization of resources and people, affecting the lives of all citizens in the warring countries, even those remote from the battlefield.
What are U-Boats ? Why did Germany ignore the Naval rules of engagement? WHat are the rules of engagement?
U-boat are German submarines used in WW1. Germany ignored naval rules of engagement, which required warning before attacking ships, because they thought unrestricted warfare would weaken Britain quickly. The rules stated that crews should be warned and allowed to evacuate before sinking ships.
In the Section “ Manipulation of Public Opinion” on page 121 explain how different Governments handled the internal conflicts and loss of patriotic morale.
Germany: used strict censorship and propaganda to maintain support and suppressed dissent.
The UK: relied on propaganda, introduced conscription, and provided financial support to soldiers’ families.
France: faced mutinies and improved soldiers’ conditions while using propaganda.
Russia: struggled with internal conflicts leading to the revolution.
US: used propaganda and passed laws to suppress anti-war sentiment.
Why were civilians displaced ? What countries were affected?
Military invasions and bombinds. Affected countries included Belgium, France, Russia, And the Ottoman Empire, as many had to flee from the front lines and occupation.
