The belief that God had planned for the US to occupy all the land from the Atlantic to the Pacific
Manifest Destiny
This was the whole middle part of the US. It belonged to Spain and France. We bought it from France.
Louisiana Purchase
President Jefferson sent them on a journey west to survey the land and report their findings to him.
Lewis and Clark
The Texas defeated Mexico and became their own country called the Republic of Texas. 10 years later they joined the US.
Annexation of Texas
This land was “given” to the US after the war with Mexico.
Mexican Cession
A small piece of land that we bought from Mexico to finish the Transcontinental Railroad.
Gadsden Purchase
The northern (upper) trail out West. It was used mostly by settlers.
Oregon Trail
It stretched from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Transcontinental Railroad
In 1848 gold was discovered. 300,000 people went to California to get rich.
California Gold Rush
The nickname given to California gold hunters.

MAP: Original place that would become the “United States” before the revolution against Britain. Bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.
Original 13 Colonies
MAP: West of the Appalachian Mountains and the original 13 states, this land was inhabited by Indians and is the first area the US expanded westward into.
The United States - 1783
MAP: This large swath of land lying west of the Mississippi River in the central part of the continent nearly doubled the size of the US when we bought it.
Louisiana Purchase - 1803
MAP: This small strip of land north of the Louisiana Purchase was given to the US by Britain.
The British Cession - 1818
MAP: This peninsula south of the original colonies that later became Florida was once claimed by both France and Spain.
