They:
- were separated from their families for a long time
- had to sleep on the open decks and got cold and wet from the wind and the rain
- did not get much sleep
- ate food like bread. porridge, dried peas/beans with salted meat/fish
- ate in groups of seven from one bowl/plate.
What was in the water that the sailors drank and what did they do to rid the water of it?
There were worms and insects in the water and it was not safe to drink. Sometimes they stirred the water with a hot iron rod to try and kill the worms and insects. The sailors would drink the water with their teeth closed so that they would not swallow the dead insects and worms.
What sickness did sailors get and what makes it happen?
Scurvy is a disease when they did not get enough Vitamin C in their diet,

The sailor’s gums in his mouth bleed and grow over his teeth. It can also make his teeth loose.
