The napoleonic wars

A

Britain and France were engaged in a war against France
Britain was focusing on this war so it gave Americans an opportunity to gain control of north America

Impressment

A

British navy ruled the high seas but sailors were in short supply so they round up and forced American seamen to serve in the navy
The US saw this as an offence to national pride and American freedom

Trade blockades

A

In the napoleonic wars Britain and France both tried to weaken the other by disrupting their enemies trade
In 1807 Britain issued laws that called for the US and other neutral nations to stop trading with France and its allies
In response to this the US passed the embargo act to to slow or stop the movement of their goods to France and Britain so their war efforts would struggle

The British have the Americans Ohio Valley but the First Nations lived here already
And they were determined to keep their land and drive out the Americans

Tecumseh and Tenskwata

A

Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief and military leader he opposed American expansion
Tenskwatawa was his brother and a spiritual Shawnee leader he wanted to unify First Nations as one community
Tecumseh’s goal was to reclaim territory
Tenskwatawa launched an attack against American forces sand lost despite warnings from Tecumseh
Tecumseh went on to be a First Nation Warrior and ally with sir Isaac Brock

Queenston heights

A

The Americans captured the high ground
Major general Brock was hit by a sniper and died
Brock’s attack held back American forces so British forces could advance
The Americans retreated and eventually surendered
there were over 1000 American prisoners
Now there’s a monument of Major general Brock in Niagara Falls

Laura Secord overheard American soldiers talking about plans to attack the British so she trekked 20 miles to warn them
The British fired at them from thick woods and behind farmers fences before they got there because of secord’s warning and won the battle in Thorold, Ontario

A

2000 American troops attacked Montreal with 900 British and First Nations defending on a path to Montreal where Chryslers farm was
The British fired back and set up a defence at Chryslers farm and successfully defended montreal

This battle was in July of 1814 with 1500 American forces attacking and 800+ casualties then the Americans retreated to fort Erie as they failed to dislodge Drummond from his position

A

Joined the British army at 15
First job was to make Quebec City more secure later did this for Montreal then for all of upper Canada
Got First Nations allies (Tecumseh) who were willing to take bold and agressive action against Americans
They successfully attacked American settlements at Michilimackinac and Detroit
Died during the battle of queenston heights

A

Chief of Shawnee people
Wanted to keep their land continuously being forced off
Decided dif he helped the British they could make a deal to keep settlers off their land
Killed during moraviantown battle

Laura secord

A

American soldiers came to their house and demanded a place to stay so they spied on them
She overheard three talking about how they would ambush the British
Laura trekked 20km to warn general fitzgibbon of this attack and the British ambushed them before they arrived and won the battle
She was later awarded 100 pounds for her heroic actions

The treaty of Ghent

A

In 1814 representatives from Britain and America travelled to Ghent, Belgium to try and reach a peace agreement and the war ended when the treaty of Ghent was signed
Neither sides had any major victories but both claim victory

Uniffying impact ion citizens of upper and lower Canada Strong anti American feeling. Showed they were willing to fight for their freedom and independence from America Gave them their fist war heroes (Sir Isaac Brock, Tecumseh, Laura Secord). Inspired Nationalism and self confidence
