A

One upping other countries, making more destructive weapons, Germany competing with the UK in building battle ships, Britain feared an attack on their empire, Germany competing with Russia and France in expanding arms.

A

a chain reaction of alliances, Triple Alliance (Germany), Triple Entente (France, Australia), by 1914 all major powers were linked by a system of alliances, alliances made it more likely for war to start, when the war started the alliances made it more likely to spread.

A

Propaganda e.g. fear of other countries, protecting cultures by separating nations (Austro-Hungary), in an age where all nations wanted to assert their power and independence, Europe Slavs who were aided by Russia wanted to be free from Austrian rule.

A

He was the king of Germany who built up there German army and navy, determined to make Germany a top nation and had an aggressive foreign policy, as well as being distrusted by other powers. His famous sayings are “Germany must have its time in the sun” and “the world belongs to the strong”.

A

He was the Austrian Prime Minister, and during the July crisis he decided on a very tough ultimatum for Serbia. His famous saying is “Were the Serbs to agree to all the demands, the world would not be to my liking.” (arrogant).

A

He was the German Prime Minister and gave very strong support to Austria during the July crisis while Kaiser was causing on his yacht. His famous saying was “The Austrian demands are moderate. Any interference by Britain, France and Russia would be followed by incalculable consequences”.

Who was Gavrilo Princip?

A

He was a Bosnian Serb student in Austro-Hungary and is the person who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie Duchess of Hohenburg in Sarajevo on the 28th of June 1914.

A

what happened in The Battle of Somme?

A

They were meant to launch a major attack on German lines in The Somme River Vally, 1.2 million soldiers were sent to the front. British mines went of early, alerting the Germans. They went in as easy targets in a non stop barrage of German machine guns. 60,000 soldiers were killed or wounded on day 1, the Germans won.

What happened in The Battle of Fromelles?

A

They planned to divert German attention from the main action to the south, preventing from sending reinforcements. The planning was rushed, the soldiers lacked experience and then length of no mans land was up to 400m. The Germans had high ground and machine guns to their advantage, they were ready. 5,533 Australian soldiers were killed, one of the most Aussie lives lost with 24 hours. Germany won.

what happened in The Battle of Pozieres?

A

The task was to take the town of Pozieres which Germany held. the ANZACs ran in while being gunned down by Germans in silence. After about a week the ANZACs won, with the three AIF divisions suffering 23,000 casualties out of the 90,000 that went.

what happened in The Battle of Passchendaele?

A

They planned to break though German lines to the North Sea ports, where German U-boats were berthed / docked. The Germans had a height advantage and wide view. There were 10 attempts over 14 weeks to break through. The men and equipment became bogged in mud and flooded fields, Haig said to go on. We lost, the Allied Forces lost 38,000 Aussies, 300,000 casualties in total.

Why would people vote for or against conscription?

A

people might vote for conscription because they think that everyone should fight for their country, protecting from the German monsters is an obligation as an Australian citizen so it should be mandatory (nationalism). Also because they think its unfair how some men who were better suited for war didn’t go while other men went. People might vote against it because they wouldn’t want people close to them fighting and dying, or it should be a choice to go snd do something so dangerous.

What rules did the government pass for war precautions?

A

Strict censorship of information (prevent rioting and keep up civilian morale, and stop information that might assist the enemy), increased control of enemy aliens (German people in Australia), limited hotel training hours (stop suspicious activity happening at late hours e.g conspiring German meetings), prevented trade with enemy countries (to not give resources or money that would assist them in war), began taxing income (to help fund the war effort)
