Militarism of WW1
One upping other countries, making more destructive weapons, Germany competing with the UK in building battle ships, Britain feared an attack on their empire, Germany competing with Russia and France in expanding arms.
Alliances of WW1
a chain reaction of alliances, Triple Alliance (Germany), Triple Entente (France, Australia), by 1914 all major powers were linked by a system of alliances, alliances made it more likely for war to start, when the war started the alliances made it more likely to spread.
Imperialism of WW1
World politics (Germany taking over neighbouring countries), ‘The sun never sets on the British empire” make them seem better or elite, all great powers competing for territory/colonies, Britain feared Germany in Africa, Austria feared Siberia/Russia in the Balkans
Nationalism in WW1
Propaganda e.g. fear of other countries, protecting cultures by separating nations (Austro-Hungary), in an age where all nations wanted to assert their power and independence, Europe Slavs who were aided by Russia wanted to be free from Austrian rule.
Who was in the Triple Alliance?
Germany, Austro-Hungary, Italy (later left), and later in WW2 the Ottoman Empire.
Who was in the Triple Entente?
France, Australia, UK, Russia, USA, Japan, (all UK colonies, eg. South Africa, India, Canada, New Zealand), and later in the war Italy
Who was Kaiser Wilhelm II?
He was the king of Germany who built up there German army and navy, determined to make Germany a top nation and had an aggressive foreign policy, as well as being distrusted by other powers. His famous sayings are “Germany must have its time in the sun” and “the world belongs to the strong”.
Who was Count Berchtold
He was the Austrian Prime Minister, and during the July crisis he decided on a very tough ultimatum for Serbia. His famous saying is “Were the Serbs to agree to all the demands, the world would not be to my liking.” (arrogant).
Who was Bethmann Hollweg
He was the German Prime Minister and gave very strong support to Austria during the July crisis while Kaiser was causing on his yacht. His famous saying was “The Austrian demands are moderate. Any interference by Britain, France and Russia would be followed by incalculable consequences”.
Who was Gavrilo Princip?
He was a Bosnian Serb student in Austro-Hungary and is the person who assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife Sophie Duchess of Hohenburg in Sarajevo on the 28th of June 1914.
What is the Balkans?
During WW1, south-east Europe was know as the Balkans.
Did Australia want the war?
a minority of Australia Opposed the war. the Society of Friends (Quakers), Pacifists and trade unions.
Where was Gallipoli intended to be fought, and where was it actually fought? Why?
Gallipoli was meant to be lower in Turkey at Ari Burnu but they miss calculated it and landed about 2km north at Anzac Cove.
who were the Black Hands?
An activist group in Serbia, wanting to free Serbia from Ottoman rule.
