what is urbanisation?
top of West Jakarta
what is a mega city?
a big city with a population of over 10,000 people
What is urbanisation?
The process of an increasing population living in urban areas (cities, towns) compared to rural areas.
what was Jakarta like before the 1930’s
Jakarta was way smaller, with a population of 530,000 people.
when did Jakarta experience a spike in population?
in the 1940’s, once in 1942 when Japan took over, and again (the bigger one) when Jakarta gained independence at the end of WW2.
why did Jakarta experience a pike in population?
a rise in employment and business opportunities, along with a better standard of living compared to other parts of Indonesia.
what was the increase in population of Jakarta?
it increased in about 150% from 1930 to late 1904’s , people immigrating both domestically and internationally.
what are three challenges Jakarta faces
lack of clean water, widespread flooding and bad waste management (also traffic congestion and air pollution)
why does Jakarta experience flooding
the city is geographically prone to flooding due to its placement of a deltaic floodplain with 13 rivers flowing through its metropolitan area.
how does Jakarta deal with lack of clean water?
the government is installing clean water pipelines to change the 65% of people with access to clean water to 100% by 2030. Also a 7 year programme to return the Cilant river (where 80% of water in Jakarta is sourced from) back to its natural clean state by 2025.
how does Jakarta deal with widespread flooding?
Jakarta has installed sea walls to stop the ocean coming in, river straightening to make water to flow away from the land faster, embankments allowing people to live around the inevitable water and flood gates & polder systems to help slow down water when it floods.
how does Jakarta deal with bad waste management?
Jakarta has put in new laws to ban single use plastic from malls and shops, and aims to recycle 70% of waste both to combat waste production.
